why social work is important?

By Secretary - LCKJ (2025) | Published on September 23, 2025

Social work is important because it advances welfare by addressing the needs of people, advocating for social justice, and empowering vulnerable groups and persons to break barriers and achieve their full potential.

Social workers assist people in overcoming challenges and enhancing their lives. Sometimes a career in social work can be difficult. However, social workers have a direct impact on improving people's lives.

For social workers, what does social work mean?

Social workers help people deal with the issues they face on a daily basis. Consequently, all social workers pledge to uphold the same fundamental principles and beliefs:

social justice and economic justice for all members of the community support for those in need, irrespective of background, adherence to the professional code of ethics, advancement of social welfare for all, and improvement of human well-being via wholesome interpersonal relationships

What Are Social Workers' Responsibilities?

A typical day for a social worker can vary significantly depending on the organization, field, and overall focus. Social workers assess their clients' circumstances, support networks, strengths, and overall needs in order to set goals. They also help clients cope with significant life changes or obstacles like divorce, illness, death, or unemployment. Additionally, social workers often suggest, research, and advertise local resources such as health care, childcare, and food stamps. School social workers help students and their families navigate learning disabilities, overcome trauma, and get the best education possible.

Key reasons social work is important:

1.     Promotes Human Well-being: Social work's main role is to improve individuals' lives by helping them cope with challenges and attain physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

2.     Champions Social Justice: Social workers are at the forefront in advocating for fairness and human rights, breaking down discriminatory systems, and challenging injustices in society.

3.     Empowers Vulnerable Populations: Social workers empower poor, vulnerable, and oppressed people by providing them with resources, support, and the empowerment skills to advocate for themselves.

4.     Solves Social Issues: Social workers solve systemic issues such as poverty, unemployment, homelessness, and discrimination, bringing stability and opportunity to individuals and communities.

5.     Offers Critical Services: They provide critical help in areas like child welfare, mental health, elderly care, and connecting people with resources and services they need.

6.     Builds Inclusive Communities: By improving diversity, acceptance, and bridging differences, social workers help create stronger, more inclusive communities where everyone can participate fully.

7.     Promotes Social Change: Beyond individual help, social workers influence policy, engage in community organizing, and work towards making society more just and humane.

  • Promote social welfare
  • Help people from all backgrounds overcome the individual challenges they are facing
  • Advocate for social and economic justice for members of diverse communities.
