Lions Clubs International
With 49,000 clubs and 1.4 million members, our association serves communities in almost every nation on the planet by lending their hands and hearts. Each year, hundreds of millions of people are assisted by our Lions and Leos..
Lions Clubs International Foundation
Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) provides grants that empower the service of our members. Since its inception in 1968, LCIF has awarded more than US$1.2 billion in grant funding.
Lions Clubs are one of the world’s largest and most respected service organizations, known for their commitment to helping people, building communities, and making a positive difference around the globe. Founded more than a century ago, Lions Clubs International (LCI) brings together men and women from all walks of life who share a passion for volunteerism, leadership, and service.
While Leo Clubs are for youth (ages 12–30), Lions Clubs are for adults (usually 18+) who want to take their spirit of service to a larger and long-term level.
A Brief History
Lions Clubs International was founded in 1917 in Chicago, USA, by Melvin Jones, a visionary businessman who believed that personal success should be combined with service to others. What began as a small group of civic-minded people quickly grew into a worldwide movement.
Today, Lions Clubs International has:
-
Over 1.4 million members
-
More than 49,000 clubs
-
Presence in over 200 countries and territories
This makes it the largest service club organization in the world.
Purpose and Mission
The core purpose of Lions Clubs is to serve the community and improve lives. Their official motto is simply:
“We Serve.”
Lions work to address the five global causes identified by LCI:
-
Vision – preventing blindness, providing vision screenings, and donating eyeglasses
-
Hunger – organizing food drives and supporting hunger relief programs
-
Environment – planting trees, recycling, and cleaning public spaces
-
Childhood Cancer – supporting children and families affected by cancer
-
Diabetes – raising awareness and providing diabetes screenings
In addition to these global causes, Lions respond to local community needs, disaster relief efforts, and humanitarian crises.
Structure and Membership
-
Community-Based Clubs: Lions Clubs are formed in local communities and run by elected officers and member volunteers.
-
Membership: Open to adults, generally aged 18 and above, who are willing to serve and contribute time and effort.
-
Meetings and Projects: Clubs meet regularly to plan service projects, discuss community issues, and socialize.
-
Global Network: Every local club is part of the larger international network of Lions, which provides support, training, and collaboration opportunities.
Relationship with Leo Clubs
Lions Clubs sponsor and mentor Leo Clubs in their communities. They offer resources, mentor young Leos, and frequently work together on volunteer projects. Many Leos continue their service journey into adulthood by becoming Lions. This connection ensures continuity of service values from youth to adulthood.
