Leos are ideal for young volunteers between the ages of 12 and 30. Leos are dedicated to helping others, developing their leadership abilities, forming relationships, and, most importantly, changing the world for the better. Things get done when Leos band together to serve. And they enjoy doing it a lot..
For young people aged 12 to 30, Leo Clubs are one of the best platforms to grow as leaders, serve their communities, and build lifelong friendships. A Leo Club is a youth organization sponsored by Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service organization. Leos are passionate about creating positive change, and when they come together, they get things done—while having fun and learning valuable life skills along the way.
A Brief History
The Leo Club Program was launched in 1957 in Pennsylvania, USA, and it became an official youth program of Lions Clubs International in 1967. Since then, it has grown into a global network of nearly 5,800 Leo clubs in around 140 countries. Over the decades, millions of young people have joined Leo clubs to serve their communities, develop their talents, and prepare themselves for future leadership roles in society.
Purpose of Leo Clubs
Leo Clubs are designed to empower youth through service and leadership. The word LEO itself stands for Leadership, Experience, and Opportunity, which perfectly sums up what the program offers. Each club operates under the sponsorship of a local Lions Club, which provides mentorship, guidance, and support. While Lions Clubs focus on service at a community and international level, Leo Clubs give young people their own space to plan, lead, and carry out service projects.
Two Tracks: Alpha and Omega
Leo Clubs are divided into two age-based tracks to better serve different stages of youth development:
-
Alpha Leo Clubs (ages 12–18):
These clubs focus on the individual and social development of teenagers. Members learn teamwork, communication, and organizational skills while being introduced to the spirit of volunteerism. Alpha Leos often take part in school-based or community youth projects. -
Omega Leo Clubs (ages 18–30):
These clubs are aimed at young adults who want to develop personal and professional skills through service. Omega Leos are usually involved in more complex service initiatives, fundraising, and community leadership activities that prepare them for future careers or leadership positions.
This structure ensures that young people are supported at different stages of their personal growth, from early teens through young adulthood.

The Leo Experience
Being a Leo is an exciting journey. It combines friendship, fun, and service. Members often form strong bonds with each other while working as a team. They learn to balance responsibilities, meet deadlines, communicate clearly, and inspire others—skills that are useful throughout life. Leos also get the chance to attend conferences, workshops, and conventions where they can meet Leos from other parts of the country or even the world.
A Stepping Stone to Lifelong Service
Many Leos eventually go on to become Lions, continuing their journey of service as adults. The Leo Club program acts as a stepping stone, nurturing young leaders who will shape the future of their communities and the world.
In short, a Leo Club is much more than just a youth club. It is a movement of energetic, service-minded young people who are building a better world while also building themselves. For anyone aged 12 to 30 who wants to make a difference, develop leadership skills, and be part of a global family, joining a Leo Club is a powerful and rewarding choice.
